Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be?

Betsy Tismeer

I am a bilingual (Spanish/English) nurse psychotherapist with over 45 years professional experience working with families, adults and children. As a therapist, I am prepared to be your emotional advocate, and to assist you with the challenges you are facing. Building trust in the therapeutic relationship in a respectful, non-judgmental environment is essential. I believe that every client situation is unique; and therefore combine an eclectic theoretical approach with professional experience in order to assess, set goals and implement a treatment plan that is specific to your needs.

Having worked as a nurse in obstetrics, labor and delivery—and being a certified specialist in postpartum depression and anxiety, I am uniquely equipped and qualified to work with mothers experiencing these problems. With my many years of experience (and hopefully subsequent wisdom), I strive to come from a place of understanding and empathy when working with clients.

Another area of specialization includes working with adolescents and young adults who are struggling with identity formation and the challenges of becoming independent. This work often involves parents and other family members as part of the therapy. Women’s mental health and couples counseling are also an important part of my practice.

As a nurse and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I am uniquely equipped to handle problems with a medical overlay. In my practice, I work with people with issues such as eating disorders, postpartum depression (peri-natal mood disorders), chronic illness/pain or instances in which medication might be a helpful and necessary adjunct to psychotherapy.

Please contact me with any questions. I look forward to answering them.
